Signs of Hormone Imbalance

Contrary to popular belief, hormones control a lot more than just moods. Our hormones can control the way that our bodies work, how we feel, and how we recover from injuries. Hormones are part of the endocrine system, and they regulate metabolism, growth, tissue function, sleep, and sexual functions. These hormones are produced by glands throughout the body, including the pituitary gland, thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries, & testicles. Each organ produces specific hormones that target specific areas and functions; however; hormones from one area of the body can dramatically impact the body as a whole.

As we age, hormone production can become imbalanced. Both men and women can be affected by these changes, and the effects are often very noticeable. Women can start to notice changes in their 30’s, while men often don’t notice until their 50’s. Even if hormone levels do not decline, the hormone receptors in the body become less sensitive, inhibiting the body’s ability to regulate the amount of hormones it needs.

Hormone imbalances affect everyone as time goes on. The good news is that imbalances are often easy to diagnose. Are you thinking that you might have an imbalance? Here are some of the symptoms:

2. Weight Gain

As people age, they may find that it’s just not quite as easy to maintain their weight as it was in the past. The adrenal gland is responsible for producing cortisol, and when the production is altered, weight gain and areas of weight gain are affected. Changes in cortisol levels can lead to excess abdominal fat, which is linked to cardiovascular disease.

2. Fatigue

Cortisol levels can also affect how rested people feel, and imbalanced cortisol levels often lead to fatigue even after a full night of sleep. This hormone controls the circadian rhythm, which determines how long the body remains in a deep, restful sleep. Hyperthyroidism can also lead to fatigue.

3. Poor Mood

Estrogen affects the hormones produced by the brain that regulate moods and irritability. Progesterone is also guilty of affecting moods. Research shows that low progesterone causes anxiety, and low estrogen levels cause depression. Women are not the only ones affected by their hormones; low testosterone levels can also cause irritability, lack of focus, and depression. The thyroid affects both men and women, and an imbalanced thyroid can cause similar symptoms.

4. Weak Bones

The thyroid can affect the amount of calcium in the blood. When the thyroid isn’t producing the correct levels of hormones, the lack of calcium may cause the bones to become brittle.

Other symptoms such as hair loss, excessive sweating, loss of sexual drive, and poor skin are also signs of hormone imbalances.
